Actually, Remington has given all of the 870 guns a serial number. Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver. The first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture. The next one or two letters are the year of manufacture.

Magnum (3" and shorter) 12ga receivers used to only have serial numbers ending in "M", but now a bunch of different letters are used. If it's a 12ga and the serial number doesn't end in an "A" of a "V", it's probably a magnum receiver.

Jun 27, 2016 · There is a very easy way to tell if your Remington 870 has a magnum receiver. Just look at the serial number engraved on the receiver and see if it ends with the letter “M.”. If it does then you have a 12-gauge magnum receiver installed in your weapon. There are also more powerful magnum receivers that can handle even more powerful shells. The "B" if the month of January. The "W" is the years of 1928, 1972, or 2002. The 870 did not exist in 1928 so that is not it. You receiver serial number closely matches the 1972 date so that is the correct year as your gun is obviously older then a 2002 model. I have a trap grade Wingmaster (from 1975) and a field grade (from 1979). Both serial numbers end in "V" because they are 2 3/4" receivers. The barrel codes are CV for the field gun and XZ on the trap gun. The CV= April 1979, the XZ = December 1975.
